The Sweet History of Keychains and Soft Toys

Quick question -when was the last time you looked at a soft toy or a keychain and thought, “Where did this even come from?” Probably never. And honestly, fair enough. But the story behind these two everyday objects is actually really interesting-  and a little surprising.

So grab a cup of chai, get comfortable, and let’s take a quick trip through history. 🧸🗝️

The History of Soft Toys - Older Than You Think

It Started Thousands of Years Ago

Soft toys aren’t a modern invention. Archaeologists have found cloth and hide figures in ancient Egyptian tombs from around 3,000 BCE. Even back then, people understood that children needed something soft and comforting to hold.

Through the centuries, parents and craftspeople around the world made handmade fabric animals and dolls stuffed with straw, wool, or cotton for children to play with.

Period What Was Happening
3000 BCE Cloth figures found in Egyptian tombs
Ancient Greece & Rome Rag dolls made from linen and papyrus
Medieval Europe Fabric animals stuffed with straw and made by hand at home
1880s Germany becomes the world’s soft toy capital
1902 The teddy bear is born
1990s Beanie Babies became a global craze
2017 Squishmallows launch and take the world by storm
Today Plush toys are loved by kids and adults alike

The Woman Who Started It All

In the 1880s, a German seamstress named Margarete Steiff started making small felt elephants as pincushions. But children kept grabbing them to play with instead.

So she started making them as toys. Simple as that. By the 1890s, she was selling stuffed animals across Europe and had unknowingly launched the modern soft toy industry.

The Teddy Bear Born From a Presidential Moment

Here's one of the best origin stories in toy history.

In 1902, US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt went on a hunting trip. His team had tied a bear to a tree for him to shoot, but Roosevelt refused because he thought it was cruel and unsportsmanlike.

A cartoonist drew the moment for a newspaper, and the image quickly became famous. A Brooklyn toymaker named Morris Michtom saw it, created a stuffed bear, and displayed it in his shop window with a sign that said “Teddy’s Bear.” It sold out immediately.

Around the same time, the Steiff company in Germany had designed a jointed stuffed bear too. An American buyer ordered 3,000 of them at a toy fair in 1903 and just like that, the teddy bear was born. The rest, as they say, is history. 🐻

Soft Toys in India

India has always had its own rich tradition of fabric toys. Long before Western plushies arrived, Indian craftspeople were creating beautiful handmade toys for children and gifting.

  • Rajasthani cloth dolls - Handmade and dressed in traditional attire, gifted at festivals for centuries

  • Kondapalli toys (Andhra Pradesh) - Colourful painted cloth animals still made today

  • Channapatna toys (Karnataka) - India’s “toy town,” known for toy-making since the 1800s

When global plush toys entered the Indian market, they blended beautifully with this tradition. Today, India is one of the fastest-growing markets for soft toys in the world.

The History of Keychains - From Ancient Rome to Your Backpack

It Starts with the Key Itself

The first keys appeared around 6,000 years ago in ancient Babylon. They were large, wooden, and very different from what we use now.

By the time of ancient Rome, metal keys had become standard, and wealthy Romans sometimes wore their house keys as rings. Having a key meant you had something worth protecting.

The Modern Keychain Begins

By the 1850s, small metal keys became common as locks became standardized. But tiny keys were easy to lose.

The solution was the split ring - the simple circular loop that holds keys together-  patented in 1894. Suddenly, people could carry multiple keys more easily.

Era What Changed
1920s–30s Small metal charms and lucky coins added to key rings
1950s Brands use keychains as advertising gifts
1960s–70s Tourist souvenir keychains go global
1980s Novelty keychains with cartoon characters and mini figurines explode in popularity
1996 Tamagotchi launches and makes digital keychains a worldwide obsession
2010s Plush keychains and bag charms become a major fashion trend
Today Collectible plush keychains are everywhere on bags, backpacks, and belt loops

When Soft Toys and Keychains Became One Thing

This is where the two stories meet.

In the 2010s, inspired by Japanese kawaii culture and K-pop fan culture, plush keychains took off in a big way. Tiny, soft, adorable miniature plushies became fashion statements on bags and backpacks.

In 2026, a plush keychain isn’t just about holding your keys. It’s comfort in your pocket. It’s personality on your bag zip. It’s a little piece of softness that travels with you everywhere.

Why We Still Love Them After All This Time

Soft toys and keychains have been around for thousands of years. And somehow, even today, we’re still buying them, gifting them, and collecting them.

  • Something soft to hold when life feels heavy
